Analyzing scientific mobility and collaboration in the Middle East and North Africa

Abstract This study investigates the scientific mobility and international collaboration networks in Middle East North Africa (MENA) region between 2008 2017. By using affiliation metadata available publications, we analyze flows linkages. Three complementary approaches allow us to obtain a detailed characterization of mobility. First, uncover main destinations origins mobile scholars for each country. Results reveal geographical, cultural historical proximities. Cooperation programs also contribute explain some observed flows. Second, use academic age. The average age migrant MENA was about 12.4 years. group 6–10 years is most common both emigrant immigrant scholars. Immigrants are relatively younger than emigrants, except Iran, Palestine, Lebanon, Turkey. Scholars who migrated Gulf Council countries, Jordan, Morocco were on emigrants by 1.5 from same countries. Third, gender differences. We observe clear gap: Male represent largest migrants MENA. conclude discussing policy relevance aspects.
